LIFE AS YOU LIVE IT

A tribute to our apartment

03 August 2014

If you haven't heard it already, I will be the first person to tell you that the North End is where it's at. Of course other Bostonians may disagree, however each neighborhood in and around Boston is very different and caters to a variety of people in different ways. Luckily, there are several neighborhoods around here leaving plenty to choose from!

Get your Boston's neighborhood poster here!

When I decided to move to Boston I tossed around the option of living on Beacon Hill or in the North End - both are very nice neighborhoods.

 I was first attracted to BH because of the beautiful brownstones, and unique buildings that surrounded the area. It's close to the Common, and has Whole Foods, shopping, and anything else you would need right at your finger tips. Win!
I didn't really pour much interest into the North End at first glance because I wanted to be literally right, smack, dab in the middle of Boston (not that the NE isn't).
My main thing was: safety, and close proximity to downtown Boston.

disclaimer: If you don't want to hear me gloat about my love for the North End, then skip this next paragraph.

As I began to look at units in the NE, I instantly fell in love with Boston's little Italy. The location was perfect! Right on the water, yet still right in the city. Quincy market and Faneuil Hall are a stones throw away, and let's not forget Haymarket on Fridays and Saturdays (Fruit and Veggies galore)! The North End is also home to a ton of history including Paul Revere's House (oldest building in Boston) and the Old North Church. This place is chock full of ethnic eateries, pubs, cafes, and ITALIAN RESTAURANTS. They have it all! It is on my "to-do" list to eat at every restaurant in the NE. In the summer we celebrate several feasts days and host festivals right on the main streets where everyone and their brother sets up a tent and serves up their choice of Italian deliciousness. The community here is great as well! I love leaving my windows open and waking up to the sounds and smells of this place. Residents sitting on their benches outside of their buildings sipping coffee, in the winter everyone breaks out their snowblowers and plows away… it's amazing. I feel like I'm living out of a story book. Not to mention, the North End is VERY safe. While we still DO have crime here, the place is filled with police, and is very "cleaned up". The North End is like a little town itself. You have laundromats, grocery stores, general stores… it's perfect. Not to mention, "The Town" (along with several other movies) was filmed right on Parmenter and No. Margin Street! Too Cool!

When it came time to decide whether or not we were going to renew our cute as a button apartment on North Margin Street, we regretfully had to decline.

Why? Well simply because we needed to upgrade. The apartment is CUTE CUTE CUTE! It has a beautiful brick wall, located on a GREAT street and was on the top floor! However, 350 sq. ft. was getting small, and I needed more space.

So I'm here today to pay tribute to this adorable shoebox!
--
 Whenever anything was dropped on the floor, it would roll downwards towards the middle of the apartment. No level floors for us.
--
I bought some pumpkins for Halloween from Haymarket and was bound and determined to carry them both back to N. Margin myself. Long story short, I once again overestimated my strength and ended up dropping them, rolling them, swearing at them... all throughout the NE. Eventually someone saw my struggle and came to my rescue. The pumpkins sat on the fire escape for a month and rotted away.
--
My roommate and I had bought a real Christmas tree, and come time to dispose of it (in January), we were unsure of how to properly do it. In Boston, they want everything in a 2-ply black trashbag. But a Christmas tree won't fit in that! SO, we did the mature thing and drug it downstairs and put it in front of some random building on trash night. The next morning when I was leaving the building, lo and behold there was the Christmas tree. Right back in front of our apartment. How? I don't know. Why? I don't know.
Either somebody was watching us as we dumped the tree the night before, or somebody followed the pine needle trail back to our apartment.

...and in case you were wondering...  the trash did come and pick the tree up.
--
The fire alarms in the building were not up to code and would constantly go off whenever they felt like it. This resulted in daily/weekly visits from the fire department. Bless their hearts. One time the FD came three times in the same day all from different units in the building. And when they come, they come! Full on sirens, water tank truck, fire truck, men suited up... snaking their way through the tiny NE streets.
--
One morning I woke up to only having power on one side of the apartment. That was strange.

--
Sometimes in the middle of the night around 4am, some random guy would yell up/at to our building for some girl. Demanding for his money and whatnot.
--
We have a basement in our building, however my roommate and I were both petrified to go down and check it out. Eventually 11 months and 3 weeks later, we ventured downstairs to discover that every unit had a huge storage container to store stuff in. What? Would have been nice to know that a couple months ago.

All packed up and ready to roll!

Scored in the moving department!

Lately...

In love with this princess.

Flew out to Ohio.

While in Ohio, helped mom rip up and replace the carpet.

 Did Ohio things.

Celebrated the nuptials of some longtime friends.

Got fancy with this winner.

Rodeo watching in Cowtown, New Jersey. It's a place.

Caught up with some family from the Netherlands!

Scoped out the location of our new apartment. Very, very excited!

Started taking real estate classes. Be jealous of that cassette player.

Began the painful process of packing.

Ventured down into the basement of my most recent apartment to discover we all had huge storage boxes down there --one week before we move. fabulous.

Ate my weight in chocolate at Max Brenner.

...three times in one week...

Continued to go sleepless nights while shoving the past year into boxes.

Scored a killer deal on some Ikea Brimnes bureaus. Getting them all cleaned up for the new abode.

Finally all packed up!

Feeling thankful for professional movers.

Shed a tear as I locked up and left my very first apartment.

Looking forward to the new adventures at the new and very upgraded apartment. Move in day is set for August 7th, in the meantime I am soaking up every ounce of sun that Myrtle Beach is giving me. Unfortunately, that's not much this week.

P.S. Happy 1 year Bostanniversary to us!! August 1st marked one, full happy year of living in the city of champions!!

My first Zipcar experience!

03 July 2014

Hey!

I'm here to spoil you with a grand adventure.

I've decided to join the bandwagon and sign up for Zipcar!

//ONE//
 Zipcar is wicked easy to sign up with, and their website is simple to navigate.

//TWO//
If you are a student or still have access to you student email, take advantage of it!
Just by signing up as a student, the $25 application fee is waived, and they knock $45 off of your annual fee. Cha-ching! Leaving you with only a $15 annual fee to pay. I'll take that!

 //THREE//
Once you have applied, they will run a background check, check your driving records and license, credit check, etc., etc...

//FOUR//
If you are accepted, they email you asking you to activate your zipcard, which you won't actually receive until a couple days later in the mail (unless you opted to pick it up in person).

//FIVE//
Once you activate your card, you are good to go and are able to begin reserving cars.
I highly suggest downloading the Zipcar app!

//SIX//
When you reserve a car, Zipcar will give you step-by-step instructions as to where to find the car, how to inspect it for preexisting damages, and how to unlock the car.
It's really simple.

Finding my car was really easy. On the website they told me exactly where to find it, not to mention they had these cute signs all throughout the garage showing you.

It's important to check your car for any damage so that they don't hold you responsible for an accident someone else created. When I walked around my car, all I found were a few scratches (which were likely caused by that big yellow pained pole), and the window seal seemed slightly out of place. I tried calling them and submitting pictures, however I couldn't get through. However, if there is an issue I do have the pictures with the time stamp on them to vouch for me. It's just always good to make sure you're covered. Take pictures of everything that seems out of place. Big or small.

I had my reservation scheduled for 11:30am, and that is exactly the time that the zipcar will unlock. Not a second before. I had an issue trying to open the vehicle, as I was waiting for some kind of green light telling me that the doors had been unlocked when I scanned my card. It doesn't turn green, you just have to listen very carefully for a little "ping" sound.

Also, the keys stay in the car, or in my cars case, it had a start button. I've never had a car with an automatic start button before, so that was a fun learning experience.

//SEVEN//
 The trip that I took was a fairly short one (to Cambridge and back), but in Boston traffic (especially for someone who NEVER drives in the city and does not know the streets very well) it took me quite a while. They are working on construction on Longfellow bridge so the route that I was hoping to take was a no go, and I had to reroute SEVERAL times. This eventually set me back further in time, so I was forced to extend my reservation. Extending my reservation was very easy. I just had to call Zipcar, and let them know (I think they charged me extra for it though, opposed to just the $4 it would have been to rent the car for an extra half hour - I'll have to check into it) and they told me I was good to go until 1:30. I really just wanted to make sure I had enough time to get back to my apartment, drop my stuff off and then return the car to the garage. In this traffic, you never know.

And of course they have 6 simple rules that they ask you to follow---

1] Report damage - Inspect your car and report any damage by calling 1-866-494-7227 before you drive.
2] Keep it clean - Remove your belongings before you say bye.
3] Fill 'er up - Always leave at least 1/4 tank of gas
4] No smoking - The cars don't like it.
5] Return on time - Late fees start at $50
6] Pets in carriers - Keep your critter in a pet carrier at all times.

What you need to know when checking out:

When you rent a car and check out, they do throw on a "MA Convention Center Financing Surcharge" of $10 (This could vary per location), and of course the expected MA Sales Tax of 6.25%.

Here's a rundown of my expenses for my short trip. I originally was going to book it for 2 hrs, however they charge you by your reservation time. So if you book it for 2 hrs, but only use it and return it within one hour, you're still charged for the 2 hrs. However, you can extend your time if you contact them, and the vehicle is not already reserved for another customer.
I booked my trip for 1.5 hrs, and checked online to see when the next reservation was, so I knew how much time I really had, if I needed to add an extension.

Costs:
Hours: 11:30am - 1:00 pm ($8.00/hr) = $12.00
Extended Reservation 1/2 hour = $?? (I'll let you know when I get billed)
MA Convention Center Financing Surcharge = $10.00
MA Sales Tax (6.25%) = $0.75
Total = $22.75

Why did I go to Cambridge and what was the point of this trip?

Honestly, I really just wanted to try Zipcar out and was eager to find a reason to go somewhere. I found this Ikea LEVANGER mirror on Craigslist for $40 (steal!), and found it to be a great excuse to transport my purchase!

I definitely over estimated my ability to do things myself. I thought that I could carry this thing down my street and then bring it up three flight of stairs and try to snake it around our very small staircase and hallways. Ha! This mirror was like 50 lbs! Thankfully, some kind Aussie guy that was visiting with his friend saw me on the struggle bus and volunteered to help. I was so glad he offered, I NEVER would have been able to bring it up to my apartment by myself.

I mean look at the size of this thing!
 I was originally going to buy the MONGSTAD mirror. So glad I didn't, it never would have fit!

Please, PLEASE ignore the filthy rug

 And here it is all set up in my bedroom! Loving it!
