We're Moving! Today!

15 June 2016

Surprise!

Remember the picture below? I dropped a hint back in March about a potential adventure coming our way.

As you may or may not know, L and I are originally from the midwest and made the move to New England in the summer of 2013 (I just realized none of the pictures from that post show up, that makes me sad). We have been in Boston for the past three years to finish up our degrees, start our careers, and experience a new and different area. I am so glad that we made the move to Boston, as it has been nothing short of an amazing place to live. I could go on and on about how great it is, however I may start crying... so let's save that post for another day! We knew that Boston would be temporary, as L missed having a backyard and the country life.

In March, L accepted a position to a job located in NH that offered him everything he was looking for, for his particular position. He and I were both very excited and interested in the area, as it would only be a short two hour +/- move for us. A couple months later, I was offered a position in the same area, which I am very thankful for as well. Through a mutual friend, we were able to secure a little home a 10 minute drive to work.

L and I also just purchased a vehicle, as we haven't needed one in three years. Now that we're in the sticks and are unable to walk everywhere, it was a necessity. As I type this, L and his brother are hitting their twelfth hour in the car as they make the trek to Boston. Once they arrive, we will pack up a few things and continue the trip right into NH!

Fortunately, we still have our apartment in Boston through July which makes moving 10x easier. Because we still have the space, we will be able to move everything over in phases. Phase one (today) is the cat, her stuff, the TV/cabinet/movies/games, and some bedding.

Being the geek that I am (no shame), I designed a moving planner to help us have a hopefully seamless move! It's 12 pages of important contacts, packing lists, room layouts, moving tips, you name it! I just put it up in my Etsy shop today.

My favorite part of the planner is on the last page under the "moving tips" section. I put together a box of "first day essentials". While we are moving to a furnished home, I still feel as though these are a few items that we may need when we first arrive. Paper towels, toilet paper, disinfecting wipes, a measuring tape, snacks, hand sanitizer, dish and laundry detergent, barrel liners, scissors, tape and pens... just to name a few. It will be nice having these very important items all together in one place for when we need them!

I will continue to keep you posted as to how the move goes! I'm thinking I will try to make a little vlog since I've been enjoying the world of youtube (my channel) lately! I'm off to continue packing! (: Wish us luck!

24 HOUR FALL CITY GUIDE

07 November 2015

Welcome to your virtual 24 hour fall guide around Boston!
I wanted to give you a little glimpse into what Fall looks like here in the city and let you in on some fun fall activities! If you happen to visiting Boston this time of the year, there are always a handful of local business's, events, and hidden gems that keep the season alive and cater to the fall attractions. If you live in a different city that offers a lot of fun fall activities as well, make your own fall list using this event planning management page to help support local event creation!

  1. This may sound like the most common Boston activity ever, however I highly recommend you take some time to WALK THE FREEDOM TRAIL, or at least some of it! You would be surprised how many of the following activities listed below you might run into en route. Whether you opt to go with a tour guide, or by yourself, the trail starts in Boston Common, takes you past many historic sites, through the North End, and ends at the Bunker Hill Monument. It's 2.5 miles long and varies in time depending on your pace and how much time you spend at each Freedom Trail site.

  2. If you are visiting on a Friday or Saturday, you might happen to come across the FRESH PRODUCE AT HAYMARKET located by Faneuil Hall and on the Freedom Trail route. Open all year round (except for Christmas day and New Years day) from dawn to dusk, this is the oldest open air market in the country! Vendors set up stands filled with fresh produce, flowers and pumpkins (in the fall) and offer second to none prices!

  3. Right next door to Haymarket, is the very new permanent, year round market featuring locally sourced food all under one roof. Open Wednesday through Sunday from 8am to 8pm, pick up some HOT APPLE CIDER AND CIDER DONUTS AT THE BOSTON PUBLIC MARKET to start (or continue on with) your day!

  4. It's important to take advantage of all of the SHOPPING ON NEWBURY STREET right before the holidays. Packed solid with almost every store imaginable, start down by the Public Garden and work your way up towards Fenway Park! Downtown Crossing and Faneuil Hall have some shops as well!

  5. Although it isn't winter yet, and probably hasn't started to snow either, ICE SKATING AT THE BOSTON COMMON FROG POND is sometimes most enjoyable when the temperatures are still manageable and you are surrounded by the beautiful fall foliage. Scheduled to open mid to late November, don't miss this perfect skating weather!

  6. If you're a basketball or hockey junkie, STOP BY TD GARDEN TO CATCH A GAME where they are constantly hosting the Celtics and Bruins! Don't have a ticket? Don't worry! There are always scalpers nearby!

  7. Known for their beer in and around the city, TOUR A HANDFUL OF MICROBREWS WITH BOSTON BREW TOURS. You drink, they drive... hop in their beer van as they tote you around to four local microbrews where you get a tour and samples at each beer house!

  8. While you're out and about feasting on Italian food in the North End, stop by THE IMPROV ASYLUM ON HANOVER STREET to get a good laugh in! On Friday and Saturday nights at 12am they have a Raunch show where they perform some adults only improv!

  9. If you're around during the HEAD OF THE CHARLES REGATTA in October, I highly recommend making an effort to swing by and watch the worlds largest two day rowing event!

THINGS TO DO OUTSIDE OF THE CITY

  1. It's important to participate in the most fall-esque activity out there, so why not do some APPLE PICKING AT THE OLDEST WORKING FARM IN THE COUNTRY, LOOKOUT FARM! Located in South Natick, the farm lets you pick your own fruit, visit with the farm animals and visit the recently launched cidery and taproom! L and I made it out to Russel Orchards last year and enjoyed the wine tasting that they had to offer!

  2. If you're a lover of Cape Cod Kettle Cooked chips, make sure you pencil the CAPE COD FACTORY TOUR into you itinerary. Located in Hyannis you will learn the ins and outs as to how their legendary chips are made!

  3. Whether you're taking a car or train, take some time to ENJOY THE NEW ENGLAND FALL FOLIAGE outside of the city. There are several driving routes, however I prefer the scenes I get from riding the Downeaster Train up North.

  4. Despite the rocky land, we do have some fun New England corn maizes and farms that draw a lot of fun! CONNORS FARM IN DANVERS offers not only a fun maize, but also a cute market and other attractions.

  5. I also encourage you to TAKE THE COMMUTER RAIL UP TO SALEM in October for your yearly dose of Halloween! October is their month and they don't miss a beat when it comes to costumes, food, parades, haunted houses, and anything else Halloween related! (Last years trip to Salem)

What fun fall things are there to do in your city!?

Snowmageddon

28 January 2015

I honestly can't imagine living anywhere that doesn't snow... it is my element.

Yesterday, we were spoiled rotten with a snow day and over two feet of snow!
The day started early Tuesday morning when we were watching the news and decided to go check out the beginning of the storm. We ventured around the North End and eventually found the CNN news crew over at the Christopher Columbus Park. After our 1 AM stroll through the neighborhood, we bunkered down into our heated bed and woke up 8 hours later to a winter wonderland! We had some snow day french toast and then bundled up to go play!

We spent a huge chunk of the day running around in the snow all over the city. We ended up at Boston Common where people were setting up jumps on hills and boarding over them, as well as sledding down the hills using boxes and trays and cross country skiing through the streets. We also found a handful of happy pups playing on the swan pond in the public garden, and a ton of news crews hanging out by the state house. New England loves this stuff.

When we were hiking back to the North End we started to starve and were crossing our fingers hoping there would be a sandwich shop or something open to quench our hunger. We turn the corner and BAM, Vito's (our go to bar) was open and packed! We were luckily able to score some seats and ordered out usual eats... grilled cheese and tacos. Stopping at Vito's made me feel like I was taking a ski break and heading into the lodge for lunch. Snow gear everywhere, and beers in everyone's hands. Except for me, I went for my favorite sunny drink because I think I'm in Florida? Afterwards we crawled home and drank up some hot, hot chocolate and took naps because we're apparently old and can't hang anymore.

Side note... L and I are loving that new "Hack My Life" show... we're learning so much!

 Yay for snow days!

A tribute to our apartment

03 August 2014

If you haven't heard it already, I will be the first person to tell you that the North End is where it's at. Of course other Bostonians may disagree, however each neighborhood in and around Boston is very different and caters to a variety of people in different ways. Luckily, there are several neighborhoods around here leaving plenty to choose from!

Get your Boston's neighborhood poster here!

When I decided to move to Boston I tossed around the option of living on Beacon Hill or in the North End - both are very nice neighborhoods.

I was first attracted to BH because of the beautiful brownstones, and unique buildings that surrounded the area. It's close to the Common, and has Whole Foods, shopping, and anything else you would need right at your finger tips. Win!
I didn't really pour much interest into the North End at first glance because I wanted to be literally right, smack, dab in the middle of Boston (not that the NE isn't).
My main thing was: safety, and close proximity to downtown Boston.

disclaimer: If you don't want to hear me gloat about my love for the North End, then skip this next paragraph.

As I began to look at units in the NE, I instantly fell in love with Boston's little Italy. The location was perfect! Right on the water, yet still right in the city. Quincy market and Faneuil Hall are a stones throw away, and let's not forget Haymarket on Fridays and Saturdays (Fruit and Veggies galore)! The North End is also home to a ton of history including Paul Revere's House (oldest building in Boston) and the Old North Church. This place is chock full of ethnic eateries, pubs, cafes, and ITALIAN RESTAURANTS. They have it all! It is on my "to-do" list to eat at every restaurant in the NE. In the summer we celebrate several feasts days and host festivals right on the main streets where everyone and their brother sets up a tent and serves up their choice of Italian deliciousness. The community here is great as well! I love leaving my windows open and waking up to the sounds and smells of this place. Residents sitting on their benches outside of their buildings sipping coffee, in the winter everyone breaks out their snowblowers and plows away… it's amazing. I feel like I'm living out of a story book. Not to mention, the North End is VERY safe. While we still DO have crime here, the place is filled with police, and is very "cleaned up". The North End is like a little town itself. You have laundromats, grocery stores, general stores… it's perfect. Not to mention, "The Town" (along with several other movies) was filmed right on Parmenter and No. Margin Street! Too Cool!

When it came time to decide whether or not we were going to renew our cute as a button apartment on North Margin Street, we regretfully had to decline.

Why? Well simply because we needed to upgrade. The apartment is CUTE CUTE CUTE! It has a beautiful brick wall, located on a GREAT street and was on the top floor! However, 350 sq. ft. was getting small, and I needed more space.

So I'm here today to pay tribute to this adorable shoebox!
--
Whenever anything was dropped on the floor, it would roll downwards towards the middle of the apartment. No level floors for us.
--
I bought some pumpkins for Halloween from Haymarket and was bound and determined to carry them both back to N. Margin myself. Long story short, I once again overestimated my strength and ended up dropping them, rolling them, swearing at them... all throughout the NE. Eventually someone saw my struggle and came to my rescue. The pumpkins sat on the fire escape for a month and rotted away.
--
My roommate and I had bought a real Christmas tree, and come time to dispose of it (in January), we were unsure of how to properly do it. In Boston, they want everything in a 2-ply black trashbag. But a Christmas tree won't fit in that! SO, we did the mature thing and drug it downstairs and put it in front of some random building on trash night. The next morning when I was leaving the building, lo and behold there was the Christmas tree. Right back in front of our apartment. How? I don't know. Why? I don't know.
Either somebody was watching us as we dumped the tree the night before, or somebody followed the pine needle trail back to our apartment.

...and in case you were wondering...  the trash did come and pick the tree up.
--
The fire alarms in the building were not up to code and would constantly go off whenever they felt like it. This resulted in daily/weekly visits from the fire department. Bless their hearts. One time the FD came three times in the same day all from different units in the building. And when they come, they come! Full on sirens, water tank truck, fire truck, men suited up... snaking their way through the tiny NE streets.
--
One morning I woke up to only having power on one side of the apartment. That was strange.

--
Sometimes in the middle of the night around 4am, some random guy would yell up/at to our building for some girl. Demanding for his money and whatnot.
--
We have a basement in our building, however my roommate and I were both petrified to go down and check it out. Eventually 11 months and 3 weeks later, we ventured downstairs to discover that every unit had a huge storage container to store stuff in. What? Would have been nice to know that a couple months ago.
--

All packed up and ready to roll!

Scored in the moving department!
